Pick the province, enter the price before tax, and see the GST or HST and any PST, RST or QST your invoice will show — worked out the way the CRA and the provinces do it.

Which tax applies where

  • HST 13% in Ontario; 14% in Nova Scotia; 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. HST is one combined rate.
  • GST 5% only in Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.
  • GST 5% plus PST 7% in British Columbia, PST 6% in Saskatchewan or RST 7% in Manitoba — on the goods and services those taxes cover.
  • GST 5% plus QST 9.975% in Quebec, on nearly everything GST applies to.

How it’s worked out

Every tax is a percentage of the price before tax — there is no tax on tax. On $1,000 in British Columbia: GST $50, PST $70, total $1,120. In Quebec: GST $50, QST $99.75, total $1,149.75.

Services are usually taxed where your client is, and goods where they’re delivered. You charge PST, RST or QST only once you’re registered with that province.

Frequently asked questions

Do I show HST as one tax or two?

As one: “HST 13%”. The CRA asks you not to split HST into its federal and provincial parts on an invoice.

Is PST charged on the GST?

No. GST and PST (or RST, or QST) are each worked out on the price before tax, then added together.

Which province’s rate do I use?

For services, usually the province of your client’s business or billing address; for goods, where they’re delivered. Our invoice generator picks the province from your client’s address, and you can change it.

Do I charge GST if I’m a small supplier?

No. If your taxable sales are $30,000 or less over four calendar quarters and you haven’t registered, you don’t charge GST/HST at all.
